Bingham Ends Day Challenge
World Champion Stuart Bingham ended Welshman Ryan Day’s hopes of victory at the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix in Llandudno with a 4-2 victory at the quarter-final stage.
Bingham goes through to the semis to face Joe Perry over 11 frames on Saturday afternoon and hopes to reach his first final of the season.
World number two Bingham was 2-1 down before winning the next two frames with breaks of 63 and 68. Day looked set to force a decider when he led 56-0 in frame six, but a bad miss on a long red gave his opponent a match-winning chance. Bingham made an excellent 64 clearance which included a clever double on the final yellow.
“I missed some easy balls tonight but also made some good breaks,” said Basildon’s Bingham. “Ryan beat me in the German Masters so I wanted to get revenge on him. He got a roar when he walked into the arena tonight, as the last Welshman he got a lot of support. That kept me digging in and trying to beat him.
“Joe Perry looks in good form – he and Shaun Murphy have been the best two players this week.”
