Bingham – Gibraltar Is Fantastic

GibraltarNew Betway Gibraltar Open champion Stuart Bingham says he loves the annual trip to the territory and hopes to go back for years to come.

Bingham won the world ranking title for the first time on Sunday night, beating Ryan Day 4-1 in the final.

“I have been to Gibraltar a few times now and obviously I have enjoyed it the most this time,” said England’s 42-year-old Bingham, who made nine century breaks during the tournament. “The weather was perfect and I love the atmosphere. The marina is beautiful with great restaurants and bars so it’s ideal for chilling out on days when you’re not playing.

“I took my wife this time, along with my manager and his wife. I expect we’ll make that a regular thing in the future and I might even bring my kids next time, it’s just a lovely place for a short holiday.

“I’m over the moon to win the title for the first time. I played well from the start and kept it going all the way through.”

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn added: “We have staged a tournament in Gibraltar since 2015 and it is a fantastic location. Each year we see a strong field with many of the best professional players, with the trophy lifted by Marco Fu, Shaun Murphy, Ryan Day and now Stuart Bingham. And the event also gives the opportunity for leading amateurs, including the best local talent, to compete in a tournament environment.

“The Tercentenary Sports Hall has proved an excellent venue and I know many players love going to Gibraltar each year.

“We are delighted to be working with our partners at the Ministry of Sports, HM Government of Gibraltar, as well as sponsor Betway. We look forward to going back to Gibraltar for many years to come.”
