Bingtao Eases Through in Barnsley
Yan Bingtao progressed to the second round of qualifying for the Shanghai Masters, thanks to a 5-0 whitewash of Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham in Barnsley.
The talented Chinese teenager displayed some fluent break building, with visits of 69, 41, 47, 44 and 55, as he came through in just under an hour and a half.
Scott Donaldson edged out an in-form John Astley 5-4. The world number 115 Donaldson started quickly, as he raced to a 3-0 advantage. After being pegged back to 3-2, Donaldson responded with a break of 79 to move within one of victory. The game went to a decider, but it was the player from Perth who held his nerve to secure the win.
Jimmy White succumbed to a 5-2 defeat against Daniel Wells. The Whirlwind had reached his first ranking event quarter-final in 12 years just days earlier in Germany. However, a strong start from Wells saw White trail 3-0. White responded with breaks of 60 and 55, but the Welshman proved too strong. Wells sealed the victory with a run of 83.
As one icon of the game departed, another progressed. James Wattana saw off Sydney Wilson 5-1. Next up for the Thai is world number 50 Mark Joyce.
