Ding is one of only six players to have won this title three times or more, having lifted the trophy in 2005, 2009 and 2019. Since that last triumph he has dropped to 38th in the world but has recently shown signs of a return to form and looked sharp in a comfortable success over Un-Nooh. He goes through to Judgement Day in Sheffield and will play Robert Milkins on Thursday at 1pm, with the winner to go through to the last 32 in York.
After taking the opening frame, Ding was on for a 147 in the second, but missed the yellow on 120. He later made a 123 to lead 3-1 before Un-Nooh pulled one back with a run of 105. Ding dominated the remainder of the match and closed out victory in frame eight with a 78.
Mark King came from 4-1 and 5-3 down to edge out Ben Woollaston in a dramatic finish, taking the deciding frame on the final blue. David Gilbert saw off Lei Peifan 6-2 with a top break of 106.
