Ding Books Fu Clash

Ding Junhui defeated Tom Ford 5-2 to reach the last 16 of the Sangsom Six Red World Championship in Bangkok and set up a mouth watering meeting with Marco Fu.

The defending champion got his group stage campaign off to a shaky start, losing 5-1 to local favourite Noppon Saengkham. That meant he needed to win his remaining matches to progress.

China’s number one secured the first of those wins yesterday against Lyu Haotian, before defeating Ford this evening.  Saengkham also progresses from group A, he beat Lyu 5-1 today.

Ding’s last 16 opponent Fu ended the group stage with a 5-3 loss to Ben Woollaston, but still finished top of group H. Woollaston also came through and will face Liang Wenbo in the first knockout round.

Liang finished off his efforts in group D with a  5-0 whitewash victory over world number 25 Michael Holt. Despite the heavy loss Holt still progressed to the knockout rounds after two-time Six Red World Champion Mark Davis succumbed to a 5-3 defeat against Atthasit Mahitthi.

2014 winner Stephen Maguire bowed out on frame difference in group E. His frame aggregate suffered a crucial blow after a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Stuart Bingham. Local star Akani Songsermsawad took full advantage, defeating India’s Kamal Chawla 5-2 to progress alongside Bingham.
