Greene Beats Wilson To Shanghai Spot

Gerard Greene defeated Kyren Wilson for the second time in the space of nine days to clinch his place at the Shanghai Masters with a 5-3 win.

Northern Ireland’s Greene regained his place on the World Snooker Tour thanks to success at the EBSA Playoffs in April. Last week he downed the Warrior at the European Masters in Belgium, with a shock 4-3 victory.

Greene backed that win up with a fine performance in Wigan. In a closely contested tie, he struck a significant blow in the fourth frame. Wilson had led 51-0, but Greene countered to clear with 67 and snatch the frame and take the lead at 3-2. From there he won two out of the next three frames to seal his 5-3 victory.

Luca Brecel continued his impressive form to reach Shanghai with a 5-0 whitewash of Welshman Jak Jones.

Brecel has been the standout performer so far in the 2017/18 campaign, topping the one-year money list. The Belgian’s earnings for the season so far currently stand at £192,600. He’ll have a chance to add to that total next month in Shanghai. Brecel eased to victory over Jones, making breaks of 63 and 76 along the way.

Mark Allen emerged from a high quality tie with Zhang Yong a 5-3 victor. The Pistol stormed to a 3-0 advantage thanks to breaks of 100 and 87. However, Zhang hit back to take the next two frames, before a century run of 117 levelled the scores at 3-3. The Antrim potter went on to take the next two frames and secure victory with breaks of 92 and 50.

Yan Bingtao and Michael Holt ensured their progress with whitewash victories. Yan overcame Eden Sharav with a 5-0 victory. While Holt saw off Chinese prospect Xu Si by the same scoreline.

Riga Masters winner Ryan Day saw off Ireland’s Josh Boileau with comfortable 5-1 win and world number seven Barry Hawkins beat Chen Zhe 5-3.
