Higgins and Williams Safely Through

John Higgins China QualifyingJohn Higgins and Mark Williams both secured wins at China Open qualifying in Preston to book trips to Beijing.

The four-time World Champion Higgins made light work of Darryl Hill, with a 5-0 whitewash over the world number 101. With the score at 2-0 Higgins made consecutive contributions of 75, 75 and 59 to seal the win.

Williams was faced with a tough test against Chinese teenager Zhao Xintong. The 19-year-old recently recorded a 5-1 demolition of John Higgins to qualify for the German Masters. He started strongly this time out against Williams, making breaks of 54 and 77 on his way to a 3-1 lead. But the 18-time ranking winner Williams then turned up the heat, winning four frames in a row to run out a 5-3 victor.

Shaun Murphy looked to have dispelled any disappointment attached to his early Masters exit with a comprehensive victory over Sydney Wilson. The world number five cruised to a 5-1 win which sealed his passage to China.

Jimmy White continued his good form with a 5-4 defeat of Sam Baird. The Whirlwind had trailed 2-0 and was behind or level for the entire match until the final frame.  White clinched the decider to inflict Baird’s third consecutive first round exit.

1995 World Championship semi-finalist Andy Hicks rolled back the years to defeat the talented Belgian 21-year-old Luca Brecel. Hicks recorded runs of 85 and 52 on his way to victory which was settled in a tense 8th frame, Hicks won it to come through 5-3.

PerryJust a few days after reaching the final of the Masters Joe Perry continued his rich vein of form. He thrashed David John 5-0 in under an hour to reach Beijing. The Gentleman made breaks of 68, 69, 94, 136 and 75 whilst restricting John to just 23 points throughout.
