In-Form Fu Crushes Ebdon
Marco Fu got his Betfred World Championship campaign off to a flying start with a 10-2 thrashing of Peter Ebdon.
The last time these two met at the Crucible was the epic 2006 semi-final which Ebdon won 17-16. This time the result was very different as Hong Kong’s Fu strolled through to a last 16 tie with Shaun Murphy or Anthony McGill. Fu hasn’t been past the second round in Sheffield since that run to the last four a decade ago, but if he keeps up today’s form he will be a handful for his next opponent.
Two-time ranking event winner Fu did most of the damage in the first session as breaks of 111, 138 and 84 helped build a 6-2 lead. He won the first frame tonight with breaks of 36 and 35 and the second with a 44 clearance. Fu went on to compile runs of 71 in each of the next two frames to seal the result.
“My long potting was really good today and I scored well when I got chances,” said Fu, whose best moment this season came in December when he won the Gibraltar Open European Tour event.
“I’m playing much better than I did in previous years, so you never know what’s going to happen. I truly believe that I’m a top eight player and today’s performance will give me a lot of confidence. I believe I can win it.
“I’ve got a few days before my next match now so I’ll watch a few of the other matches, work with my coach Wayne Griffiths and make sure I’m ready for the second round.”
Ebdon, the 2002 champion, added: “I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute, I loved it out there. I would have liked to have had a few more chances, but Marco shut me out. He was excellent.”
