Judgement Day: Tuesday Round Up
Jamie Jones moved within one frame of a place in the final stages of the Betfred World Championship by storming into a 9-0 lead over Liang Wenbo in the last qualifying round.
All 16 matches at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield will finish in Wednesday (click here for the scores and schedule) with the winners to go through to the Crucible just a few miles away.
Welshman Jones, who reached the quarter-finals at the Crucible in 2012 and last played there in 2015, looked to have a tough draw against China’s Liang, but reeled off nine frames today with top breaks of 54, 78, 63, 57, 79, 74, 58 and 58. However he will be mindful of his previous match where he lost six frames in a row from 9-1 up against Yu Delu, before winning 10-7.
Chris Wakelin opened up an 8-1 lead over Tian Pengfei in a match which will produce a Crucible debutant. Wakelin top scored with 125 and made five other breaks over 50.
Two-time finalist Matthew Stevens takes a 7-2 lead over Ken Doherty into the final day of action. Robert Milkins is 7-2 up on Michael Holt while Joe Perry leads Mark Davis by the same scoreline.
Stephen Maguire won the first four frames of his match with Hossein Vafaei, though Vafaei – aiming to become the first Iranian player to reach the Crucible – gave himself hope by taking three of the next five to trail 6-3 overnight.
