Former world number two Knowles has now won five matches over the three Q School events, proving he remains competitive at the age of 65.

Today’s win was perhaps his best yet as he made breaks of 67 and 56 in taking a 3-0 lead. Former pro O’Sullivan pulled one back before Knowles took frame five on the colours to set up a match with Mark Lloyd. The tournament finishes on Sunday, with the four semi-finalists earning a two-year tour card.

Ian Burns, who finished last season ranked 65th in the world so just one place away from safety, fired runs of 64, 89, 93 and 64 in a 4-0 victory over Yu Kiu Chang.

Iran’s Soheil Vahedi top scored with 86 in a 4-0 defeat of Rodion Judin, while Poland’s Mateusz Baranowski made a 132 in a 4-3 win over Fergal Quinn.

Sanderson Lam beat Brian Ochoiski 4-1 while Luke Pinches – son of Barry – beat Arun Mehta by the same scoreline. Michael Georgiou made a 98 in a 4-1 defeat of Sydney Wilson.
