Maguire Whitewashed By Zhang
World number 70 Zhang Anda scored a surprise 4-0 victory over Stephen Maguire in the qualifying round for the BetVictor English Open.
It’s a blow to world number 25 Maguire’s hopes of regaining a top 16 spot as he was outplayed by his Chinese opponent and misses out on a trip to the final stages in Brentwood in December.
Zhang compiled breaks of 85 and 101 to go 2-0 ahead. Maguire led 66-5 in frame three, only for his opponent to make an excellent 64 clearance. And Zhang took the fourth on the colours to secure the result.
Estonia’s Andres Petrov scored his first win on the pro tour with a 4-3 success against Brazil’s Victor Sarkis, taking the deciding frame by clearing from yellow to pink. Ben Woollaston trailed Jamie Clarke three times but recovered to win 4-3.
Dechawat Poomjaeng edged out Alexander Ursenbacher 4-3, winning a 41-minute decider on the final blue. Mark Davis, runner-up in this event in 2018, top scored with 100 in a 4-2 win over Xiao Guodong, while Fan Zhengyi made a 101 in a 4-1 defeat of Andy Hicks.
