Moore, who took charge of the World Championship final for the first time at the Crucible Theatre in May, was invited by the hospice to join their list of patrons, which includes football manager Howard Wilkinson and boxing coach Brendan Ingle.

“Around a week after the world final I got an email asking if I would like to become a patron,” said 42-year-old Moore. “I was very proud to accept because it’s a great facility and they do a lot of important work looking after terminally ill people in Sheffield.

“Being a patron will involve visiting the hospice from time to time – which is only 15 minutes from where I live – spreading the word about St Luke’s and attending fund-raisers.”
