Shaun Murphy recovered from a shaky start to beat Lyu Chenwei 6-2 at the International Championship qualifiers in Barnsley.
China’s Lyu won the opening frame on the colours before world number six Murphy hit back to win six of the next seven frames with top breaks of 83, 69 and 134. He goes through to the final stages in Daqing later this month.
Darryl Hill showed his potential with a fine win
World number 15 Stephen Maguire became the highest ranked player to be knocked out so far when he lost 6-2 to Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham, whose top break was 61.
Robert Milkins also suffered a surprise defeat as he went down 6-4 to Darryl Hill, a tour rookie from the Isle of Man.
China’s Xiao Guodong cruised to a 6-0 win over Jason Weston with a top run of 66 while Oliver Lines came from 2-0 down to beat Gary Wilson 6-3 with a top break of 80.
Marco Fu made 133 and 106 in a 6-2 win over Paul Davison while Ali Carter top scored with 100 in a 6-0 defeat of Luke Simmonds. Barry Hawkins was also on the right end of a whitewash, beating Rhys Clark 6-0.
