Ronnie O'SullivanFive-time Crucible king Ronnie O’Sullivan went 6-3 up on David Gilbert as their Betfred World Championship clash got underway.

O’Sullivan is bidding for his third title of 2016 having won the Masters and Welsh Open, and is aiming for his first world crown since 2013.

Qualifier Gilbert took the opening frame before O’Sullivan reeled off three in a row with breaks of 72, 84 and 71. Gilbert won the next with a 91 and looked set to make it 3-3 until he broke down on 56 in frame six. O’Sullivan replied with 43 and later snatched it with a 33 clearance.

Gilbert showed his break-building class with a 125 to close to 4-3 and he led 48-0 in frame eight but again O’Sullivan battled back to win it, and he then made a 71 in the last of the session to secure a three-frame overnight lead. They resume at 10am on Monday.
