Just as he did in his first match against Mark Davis, O’Sullivan made one century and four more breaks over 50 in a rapid victory.

Runs of 71, 81, 53, 95 and 134 helped the five-time World Champion set up a meeting Shaun Murphy tonight.

Masters champion Murphy came through a dramatic match against Mark Allen by a 5-4 scoreline. Murphy looked in full control when he took a 3-0 lead with top breaks of 94 and 73. But Allen won the next four frames with top runs of 100 and 75 and the Ulsterman looked set for victory in frame eight when he led 62-16 with two reds left.

But Murphy gained the snooker he needed then made brilliant colours clearance, including superb pots on yellow, green and pink. And the Englishman went on to take the decider with a break of 76.

Welshman Ryan Day saw off Alfie Burden 5-2 with top breaks of 87 and 73. He now meets China’s Liang Wenbo, who came from 4-3 down to beat Stuart Bingham 5-4, taking the decider by clearing from last red to pink.

Quarter-final line-up:

Shaun Murphy v Ronnie O’Sullivan
Ryan Day v Liang Wenbo
Judd Trump v Mark Selby
Neil Robertson v Stephen Maguire
