Terry Griffiths enjoyed a superb amateur career but could not have expected to make such an immediate impact in the professional game. In only his second professional tournament, he won the 1979 World Championship, beating Dennis Taylor in the final.

The Llanelli potter went on to win the two other biggest titles in the sport, the UK Championship and the Masters. He remained one of snooker’s most fierce and skilled competitors throughout the 1980s and reached the Crucible final again in 1988, losing to Steve Davis.

Griffiths remains in the limelight as a commentator for BBC Sport and as a leading coach, providing guidance to the likes of Ding Junhui, Barry Hawkins and Mark Allen.
