Podcast With Hammad Miah
Hammad Miah gives an insight into the challenges that players face when they first turn professional, in the new episode of the WST Podcast.
World number 71 Miah first gained his tour card in 2013 when, at the age of 19, he came through Q School. “There’s a huge misconception about turning pro,” he told Michael McMullan. “Our dream is to get on to the tour, but that is only five percent of the journey. I was thinking I could have a very good future ahead of me in snooker. You grow up seeing the big names on TV, then all of a sudden you are playing against them. It all happened too fast, I didn’t have time for it to soak in.
“I got complacent, I thought I was better than I actually was. That’s where you really need proper guidance, someone there to help you mature into a better player. I don’t see it with the Chinese players, they are different to us. I see it with the players here in England, we think we are better than we are, with too much confidence. You think you can beat anyone but you have no track record. It was tough, but it was great as well. But if you are just making the numbers up, falling off the tour and coming back on, that’s not life, it’s not enjoyable. Lack of maturity got the better of me in my early career.”
