Preston To Host Snooker’s World Grand Prix
Snooker stars from around the globe will once again head to Preston’s famous Guild Hall venue in February for the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix.
The iconic Lancashire venue staged this world ranking event for the first time this year and the 2018 tournament will take place from February 19 to 25. Tickets are ON SALE NOW and fans are advised to book quickly because certain sessions will sell out.
Televised by ITV4, the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix features 32 players taken from a unique ranking list which runs from the start of the season until the Shoot Out, which finishes on February 11. So players are battling for a place in that top 32 throughout the season so they can make sure of a place in Preston.
Barry Hawkins won the title last season, beating Ryan Day 10-7 in an exciting final. Top stars including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Shaun Murphy and Ding Junhui were also battling for the £100,000 top prize.
World number six Hawkins said: “Winning the trophy in Preston last year was up there with the highlights of my career, alongside playing in the World Championship final against Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2013.
“All the best players were in the tournament and to win the title against such a strong field was unbelievable.
“I’ve won three ranking titles and two of them came at the Guild Hall so it has been a great venue for me – there’s something about it I love and I’m glad the World Grand Prix is staying there.
“From the start of the season all the players have an eye on the one-year ranking list and making sure we’re in this one and then the Players Championship. They are two massive tournaments and if you miss out you are falling behind everyone else. If you’re in them, you can win big money.”
