Robertson Ends Fu’s Hopes

Neil Robertson beat Marco Fu 6-4 to reach the final of the Hong Kong Masters, ending Fu’s hopes of winning his home tournament.

On Sunday, Australia’s Robertson will have the chance to win his first title since his 2016 Riga Masters triumph which came 13 months ago. He will face Ronnie O’Sullivan or Judd Trump in the final of this invitation event, with a £100,000 top prize up for grabs.

Fu took an early 3-1 lead in a high quality match, knocking in breaks of 70, 103 and 59, while Robertson’s only response came with a run of 60 in frame two. But 2010 World Champion Robertson hit back strongly after the interval, winning three frames in a row with top runs of 59 and 100. He trailed 48-17 in frame eight but eventually took it with a 31 clearance to lead 5-3.

Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam was among the crowd cheering on home favourite Fu

Fu pulled one back with a break of 70, only for Robertson to clinch victory in the next frame with an 82.

“I didn’t do too much wrong to be 3-1 down,” said Robertson. “I kept myself calm at the interval because I was still happy with the way I was playing. I just needed to make more of my chances. My safety was really good after the interval, I potted good long balls and scored heavily. Plus I pinched a couple of close frames which always makes a difference. The frame to go 5-3 was very important.

“I’m really pleased to get through because Marco has a lot of support from the home crowd. It was important for me to play attacking snooker and get some of the crowd on my side.

“Judd and Ronnie are both amazing players. Top players always enjoy playing each other. The final will be a great occasion with a big crowd. Whatever happens I’m going to enjoy the experience and do my best to win.”
