Selby Reaches Last Eight

Mark SelbyMark Selby has ended a fine run by Stuart Carrington, to clinch a place in tomorrow’s quarter-finals at the Shanghai Masters.

The World Champion made a run of 87 to win the opener. He looked set to double his lead after a contribution of 58 in the second, but Carrington countered to level the scores. Breaks of 120 and 73 helped Selby to claim the next two frames and open out a 3-1 lead.

Carrington wasn’t going to go down easily. He made three sizable breaks to come back from 4-2 down against Joe Perry yesterday and he hit back at Selby in the fifth frame here with a run of 73.

The game became more compact in the closing stages and that suited the tenacious Selby. Despite losing the seventh frame on the black, he found the remaining two frames he needed to run out a 5-3 winner.

Stephen Maguire overcame Barry Hawkins to reach the last eight, with a 5-3 victory. The Scot, who made a maximum break on Tuesday, moved into a 4-1 lead with breaks 40, 53 and 46.  The Hawk mounted a comeback as he made contributions of 72 and 66 to close the deficit to 4-3. However, Maguire ruthlessly slammed the door shut with a break of 91 to wrap up the win.

2015 World Champion Stuart Bingham is safely through after seeing off David Gilbert 5-2. Bingham raced into a 3-0 lead. Gilbert replied with a break of 68 to take the fourth frame, but the lead was too much to overturn. 40-year-old Bingham will face the winner of this afternoon’s game between Ali Carter and John Higgins.

Ryan DayRyan Day produced two centuries to battle past China’s Mei Xiwen in a high quality match. After losing the opener to a break of 79, Day responded with runs of 59, 102 and 107 to take a 3-2 lead. The Welshman made a break of 82 in the seventh frame to secure a 5-2 victory. He’ll face Selby in tomorrow’s quarter-finals.
