Tom FordMark Selby joined Ronnie O’Sullivan and Neil Robertson as the big-name casualties in the first round of the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix as he lost 4-2 to Tom Ford.

Following defeats for O’Sullivan and Robertson against Michael Holt and Peter Ebdon respectively yesterday, world number one Selby became the third member of the top tour in the rankings to fail to clear the opening hurdle in Llandudno. Ford, ranked 48th, goes through to the last 16 to face Ali Carter, a 4-1 winner over Luca Brecel.

Selby won the opening frame with a break of 60 before fellow Leicester cueman Ford took three in a row with a top run of 112. Selby took the fifth to make it 3-2 and had first chance in the next but could only make 16, and Ford clinched victory with an 84.

“I felt relaxed tonight because Mark and I grew up together so I didn’t think of it as playing the world number one,” said Ford. “I played well and Mark missed a few. It’s up there with my best wins of the season. Mark was due to get me a ticket to see Leicester play Newcastle on Monday but I’m not sure he will now!”

Ali CarterCarter closed with a break of 103 in an impressive win over German Masters finalist Brecel.

Shaun Murphy took just 54 minutes to beat Michael White 4-0, firing in runs of 75, 79 and 89. He now plays Martin Gould.

“In snooker these days you can’t wait for opportunities, you have to seize the day and got for your shots,” said Murphy. “When the stars align you have to make sure you take your chances. My chances have improved now that three of the best players on the planet have gone out, but I’m too old in the tooth to say I’m going to go on and win it. I’ve just to to prepare properly for my next match.”

Kyren Wilson set up a match with Joe Perry by beating Jamie Jones 4-2. Shanghai Masters champion Wilson won a crucial fifth frame after needing a snooker to go 3-2 up then made a 73 in the next.
