Senior Success For Davis

Mark Davis won the 888sport World Seniors Championship for the first time by beating Darren Morgan 2-1 in the final in Preston.

World number 23 Davis won four matches at the Guild Hall to claim the £18,000 first prize.

Davis clinched the opening frame of the final with a break of 35 before Morgan, who won this title in 2011, made a 55 in the second as he levelled at 1-1. But it was Davis, age 43 from Hastings, who took the decider with a run of 76.

His previous career highlights include winning the Six-Red World Championship in 2012 and 2013 as well as the B&H Championship in 2003.

In the semi-finals, Davis edged out Rory McLeod 2-1 while Welshman Morgan beat Jimmy White 2-0.

“It feels brilliant, it feels great to win any tournament,” said Davis. “It’s a tough event with a lot of good players in it, and best of three makes it very cut throat. I’m over the moon because it’s good money and it’s my name on the trophy at the end of the day.

“I played some good stuff at times which is pleasing, especially in the last frame there when I felt a bit twitchy. It was nice to knock in a frame winning break off one chance. It’s brilliant to win a televised event in the UK for the first time.

“Darren is a really tough player, I know Lee Walker who is a good mate of mine and plays in his club and he said that he has been putting the hours in.

“My form has been consistent recently and I’m gutted that I am not going to the German Masters now because I love that tournament, but it also means that I have got a week off.”
