Shaun Murphy wins the PTC Grand Final

Shaun Murphy beats Martin Gould 4-0 in the final

Shaun Murphy is the winner of the first Players Tour Championship Grand Final.

Murphy defeated Martin Gould 4-0 in front of a sold out crowd in the final at the Helix in Dublin.

This was the culmination of a competition that included 12 events in England, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic and then a 24-man knockout tournament.

Gould was playing in his first televised ranking event final but never looked like repeating his shock of the semi-finals when he beat world number four Mark Selby.

At the start of the series we were all desperate to get into the top 24 as we all knew the atmosphere in Dublin would be great.

“In the first matches in Sheffield a few months ago I could hardly win a match but to win the whole thing is a dream come true.

“I’ve had a bit of bad luck and missed a few balls but the standard is going through the roof.

“Historically, short matches have never been a strong point of mine but I’ve been doing a lot of work on the mental side of things and changing my perspective on a number of issues – that’s really helped me.”

Gould reached the final of a televised ranking event for the first time after victories against Jamie Jones, Judd Trump, Michael Holt and Mark Selby.

But Murphy, who has now won four ranking competitions, felt his extra experience was crucial.

“Your first final is obviously very difficult and Martin did have a couple of chances,” added Murphy.

“I don’t want to say I was the experienced professional as I still feel like the kid I was when I turned professional myself but my experience in these finals came through.

“He hit some fantastic shots and he’s had a fantastic tournament. Martin, more than anyone else, is such a flag-bearer for the PTC tournaments.

“This is four ranking events I’ve won, but I’m keen to make that number as big as possible.”
