Maguire beat Ricky Walden 8-7 in last year’s final
Defending champion Stephen Maguire lost his first two group matches on the opening day of the SangSom Six Red World Championship at Fashion Island in Bangkok.

Maguire won the title for the first time last year, but faces a struggle to progress to the knockout phase this time after losing 5-2 to Pankaj Advani and 5-1 to Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon. The top four from each of eight groups of six go through to the last 32.
John Higgins lost his opening match 5-4 to Yuan Sijun but recovered with a 5-3 defeat of Boonyarit Keattikul.

Selby got the better of Doherty
World number one Mark Selby started strongly by beating Joe Swail 5-1 and Ken Doherty 5-2, while Judd Trump’s only match on the first day was a 5-0 whitewash of Ahmed Galal.
Ding Junhui saw off Phaitoon Phonbun 5-1 while World Champion Stuart Bingham enjoyed a 5-0 defeat of Soheil Vahedi.
