The record of 86 tons over the 17-day Crucible marathon, set in 2015 and equalled the following year, looks well within reach.

When the record was set in 2015 there were 47 tons by the end of the second round, and the following year there were 58 at the same stage. This time there are still two days of second round action remaining, so the record is certainly under threat.

Hawkins in fact had a chance of a 147 in the second frame, but missed the black with one red left on 105. Surprisingly, there hasn’t been a maximum break at the Crucible since Stephen Hendry’s 147 in 2012.

So far this year, front-runner for the £10,000 high break prize is Judd Trump’s 141, made during his opening match against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. Shaun Murphy has made the most tons with six, though he has been knocked out by Neil Robertson, who sits alongside Stephen Maguire with five centuries.

For every century made, Betfred will donate £100 to our official charity Jessie May, and if the ton-tally reaches 80 then the donation will be rounded up to a massive £25,000.

Back in 1977 when the Crucible first hosted the World Championship, only six centuries were made. The number of tons has been on a general upward curve ever since, as the standard of play and quality of conditions has improved. Could there be a century of centuries during the Championship before long?
