All about the player who knocked Ding Junhui out of the UK Championship…
Interview by Jonathan Davies
Abroad – What is your favourite holiday destination?
Dubai – it’s red hot and there’s so much stuff to do.
Book – What is the last book you read?
I’m halfway through Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters.
Cue – What cue do you use?
I use a Martin Chesworth cue – I’ve had it for about 14 years. I had it made longer after the World Championship last year and I totally ruined it but, fortunately, a guy from Sheffield called Andy Travis has got it back to how it was so I’m very grateful to him for that.
Day – What happens in a typical working day for you?
If I’m not working with my dad, who’s a builder, I get up and go to the gym at about half six in the morning. Then, I spend it practising at the Star Snooker Academy or at my local club in Norton until about 5pm.
Education – How would you get on in a pub quiz?
If they were all sports questions then I’d win it!
Film – What is your favourite film?
I love Rush Hour 1, 2 and 3.
Goals – What are your aims for this season?
To get back on the tour and earn as much money as I can as an amateur.
Hobbies – What are your interests away from the table?
Football – I love going to watch Sheffield Wednesday.
Idols – Who are yours?
Ronnie O’Sullivan because he’s the best snooker player ever and, also, Prince Naseem Hamed because I loved how confident he was.
Job – What would you be if you weren’t a snooker player?
I’d like to live in America, so I’d probably be working in a bar or anything just to get over there.
Kid – Were you a well-behaved child?
My mum and dad said I was – I was cheeky but I was nice!
Lucky – What is the biggest piece of luck you’ve ever had?
Winning a football bet. I’ve been very lucky this season – I’ve won about six, but I lost about 400 last year.
Moan – What makes you have a good moan?
If I’m tired and if something isn’t going my way.
Nightmare – What is your worst moment on a snooker table?
I played Jack Lisowski in the Welsh Open two years ago. I’d put that much weight on that I couldn’t fit in the waistcoat – it kept bursting open. I lost 4-0 and I left it in the arena, I was that annoyed with myself.
Oops! – What is the clumsiest thing you’ve ever done?
I was out with the lads one night and dropped a tray of 12 pints on the floor. I then had to do a shot for every pint!
Picky – Is there anything you are particular about?
If I’m going out, I like to wear certain clothes and I can’t go without going on a sunbed first.
Quiet – How long could you last in a sponsored silence?
Not long, about 10 minutes. I’d have to make a joke about being silent.
Retirement – What do you plan to do after hanging up your cue?
Hopefully by then, I’ll have earned a lot of money, so I’d like to enjoy nice weather and travel the world.
Shopping – Where do you buy your clothes from?
Mainly Foot Asylum.
Telly – What are your favourite programmes?
Only Fools and Horses – I love it, I can watch it anytime anywhere.
Unforgettable – What is your greatest ever moment on a snooker table?
When I turned professional because my dad was there and he did a lot for me. Also, when I played Ronnie on the BBC – I’d idolised him so much and it was really special to play him on TV.
Venue – What is your favourite venue to play at?
I’m going to say the Crucible – I’ve never played there, but I’m from Sheffield so it’s extra motivation.
Wheels – What car do you drive?
Audi A3 – I’ve had it for about six months.
X – If you could kiss any girl in the world, who would it be?
I’ll say Kim Kardashian – I don’t like her, but the missus does and she’ll laugh if she reads this!
YIKES! – Do you have any phobias?
I don’t like spiders and I sometimes get a bit claustrophobic.
Zzzzz – What puts you to sleep?
I like to tickle my toes in between the covers – it soothes and relaxes me.
