The A-Z Of Mark Davis

As the SangSom Six Red World Championship gets underway, two-time winner Mark Davis tells us more about his life on and off the table…

Mark Davis

Mark is currently ranked 19th in the world

Abroad – What is your favourite holiday destination?
Las Vegas. I’ve been a couple of times and it’s a brilliant place – I definitely want to go again.

Book – What is the last book you read?
The Secret by Rhonda Byrne – it was about psychology and was quite interesting.

Cue – What cue do you use?
I’ve got a John Parris cue – I’ve had it for about 15 years now.

Day – What happens in a typical working day for you?
I take my little man to school, get to the club just before 9am and then practise for however long I feel.

Education – How would you get on in a pub quiz?
I watch Eggheads most days and get a few answers right, so I like to think I’m not as stupid as people think. There’s a little bit of knowledge up there somewhere.

Film – What is your favourite film?
The Shawshank Redemption by a mile – brilliant actors, brilliant story and an incredible film.

Goals – What are your aims for this season?
To try to win an event – I’ll take anything! A major title would be ideal, but a European Tour event is just as good because you have to play more matches.

Hobbies – What are your interests away from the table?
When I’m at home, I like to spend time with the kids. We’ve got a dog now as well. I play a bit of golf and I will start training for a half-marathon next week. I’m going to give it a go and try to raise some decent money this time because I’m not getting any younger.

On the tee…Mark enjoys the odd game of golf.

Idols – Who are yours?
Phil Mickelson without a doubt. I love the way he plays the game of golf and conducts himself – he always has time to sign autographs whether he shoots 65, 75 or 85. I also like Roger Federer, he just oozes class and never even breaks a sweat!

Job – What would you be if you weren’t a snooker player?
I’m quite good with numbers and have done a couple of book-keeping courses, so probably something along those lines or accountancy.

Kid – Were you a well-behaved child?
Yes, I was pretty good. I got brought up well and taught respect. My parents never took any nonsense and my mum gave me a smack on the bum if I was naughty. The way kids talk to their parents nowadays is unbelievable, I’d never have got away with doing that.

Lucky – What is the biggest piece of luck you’ve ever had?
Having two beautiful kids – they’re healthy and people take that for granted sometimes. That’s luckier than anything else on the snooker table.

Moan – What makes you have a good moan?
I moan at everything. If there’s something there, I’ll have a moan about it.

Nightmare – What is your worst moment on a snooker table?
I’ve played at the Crucible a couple of times when I’ve been really ill. To go out in snooker’s major venue and not be able to make 10 is a horrible feeling.

Oops! – What is the clumsiest thing you’ve ever done?
I shut the car door on my finger once – I wouldn’t advise it, to be honest. My finger was blue for three or four weeks.

Picky – Is there anything you are particular about?
I like to have things in a certain order, like lining my shoes up properly and being tidy. It’s a little bit of OCD but I think most people have it one way or another.

Quiet – How long could you last in a sponsored silence?
I can keep quiet if I have to. If people aren’t there to make me talk then I think I’d do alright.

Retirement – What do you plan to do after hanging up your cue?
I have thought about that over the last few years, but I’m just focused on the snooker for now. I’d love to stay involved in snooker – I’ve played since I was 12 and still have a lot to offer.

Shopping – Where do you buy your clothes from?
I quite like SuperDry stuff but it generally depends what I like and what’s comfortable, I’m not too bothered what it is. I quite like shopping though. If we go to London, I can sometimes spend more than my wife.

TV – What are your favourite programmes?
I think The Office is brilliant. Being away a lot, I like to watch a lot of box sets – Breaking Bad, 24, Prison Break, Entourage and have just finished Game of Thrones. I need to find a new one to watch now.

Mark Davis

Six of the best…Mark’s proudest moment was successfully defending his Six Red world title in 2013

Unforgettable – What is your greatest ever moment on a snooker table?
I’ve won the Six-Red World Championship and the old B&H Championship. Winning the Six Reds for a second year in a row in Thailand and defending the title was special for me.

Venue – What is your favourite venue to play at?
Either Alexandra Palace or the Tempodrom. I played Mark Allen in the Masters at Ally Pally a couple of years ago and it was a very special atmosphere. I also love it in Berlin – the set-up and crowd is always great in Germany.

Wheels – What car do you drive?
I’ve got an Audi Q5 at the moment.

X – If you could kiss any girl in the world, who would it be?
Apart from my wife, obviously, I quite like Rachel McAdams.

YIKES! – Do you have any phobias?
I’m not really keen on spiders or snakes. Also, I can’t touch sticks on lollipops or ice creams – if I have one, I have to leave the wrapper on the stick.

Zzzzz – What puts you to sleep?
Talking to Matt Selt for five minutes normally does the trick.
