Trump saw off Peter Lines 5-1 with a top break of 64 while Ding, who won this title in 2014, beat Gareth Allen 5-2 with a top run of 90. All first round winners need to get through one more round to reach the final stages in Berlin in February.

Former World Champion Ken Doherty came from 4-2 down to beat Michael Georgiou 5-4, knocking in runs of 55, 89 and 64 in the last three frames.

Stephen Maguire scored the top break of the day, 137, in a 5-1 defeat of Chris Wakelin.

Ali Carter, who won this event in 2013, came from 2-1 down to beat Barry Pinches 5-3 with a top break of 102, while Barry Hawkins top scored with 119 in a 5-2 win over Luke Simmonds.

David Grace saw his fine run of form interrupted as he lost 5-4 to Rhys Clark, while amateur Andy Hicks edged out Dominic Dale 5-4.
