Trump Stages Stunning Fightback
World number four Judd Trump rallied from 4-0 down to beat Chris Wakelin 5-4 and remain in the BetVictor European Masters in Nuremberg.
Victory sees 23-time ranking event winner Trump maintain his 100% record against Wakelin, having now won all 11 of their previous meetings. The most significant of those also involved a decider, at the 2018 World Championship, with Trump coming through 10-9 in the opening round clash.
Wakelin has been playing with heightened belief since landing his maiden ranking title with victory at the Shoot Out earlier this year. He showed that in the early stages this morning, with breaks of 52 and 87 helping him on the way to a shock 4-0 advantage.
The Nuneaton cueman went on to have several chances to close out the tie, but 2019 World Champion Trump showed his steel with runs of 92 and 69 to come from behind in frames five and six and make it 4-2. Trump then surged for the finish and further contributions of 57, 59 and 100 saw the Bristolian complete an epic fightback and emerge a 5-4 victor.
Trump now faces Leicester’s Ben Woollaston in the last 16 this evening. Woollaston came through with a 5-4 win over Tom Ford this morning.
Shaun Murphy continued his red-hot form with a 5-0 win over Ross Muir to set up a blockbuster clash with John Higgins this evening. Recent BetVictor Championship League winner Murphy 83, 52 and 111 on his way to victory.
Defending champion Kyren Wilson scored a 5-0 whitewash win over World Championship semi-finalist Si Jiahui. Next up the Warrior meets Welshman Duane Jones.
