Allen couldn’t complete his comeback at Preston’s Guild Hall
World number 69 Daniel Wells produced a fine display to prevent 2014 finalist Mark Allen from qualifying for the International Championship.
Visits of 59 and 71 in the opening frame settled Wells into the match. He carried his form over and moved into a 5-1 lead.
World number seven Allen wasn’t going to allow the Welshman to stumble over the line and began to fight back. Contributions of 46, 46, 89 and 47 helped him to take four frames in a row and force an unlikely decider.
In a tense final frame, which lasted nearly three quarters of an hour, Wells managed to wrest back the momentum and edge over the line, securing a massive 6-5 victory and a place in the International Championship.
Judd Trump earned his place in Daqing with a win over Iran’s Hossein Vafaei Ayouri. In an entertaining encounter, Trump made breaks of 62, 100 and 127, as he ran out a 6-2 victor. Ayouri failed to progress, but did make a century break of 104 in the fifth frame.
Shaun Murphy came through by the same scoreline against Kritsanut Lertsattayathorn. After going 2-0 down, Murphy turned up the heat and produced runs of 130, 50, 84, 59 and 55. The Magician claiming six frames in a row to secure a 6-2 win.
Anthony Hamilton made a tremendous comeback, to defeat Robert Milkins. The Sheriff of Pottingham trailed 4-1, as Milkins surged ahead. However, Hamilton snatched the sixth frame on the black, before breaks 58 and 56 helped him to go 5-4 in front. Milkins forced a decider, but it was Hamilton who progressed with a 6-5 win.
