Whirlwind Blows McGill Away
Jimmy White beat a top-16 ranked player for the second time within a month as he scored a 5-3 win over Anthony McGill in the first qualifying round of the D88 German Masters.
Veteran White, age 55, knocked Ali Carter out of the UK Championship last month and he produced another superb result in Barnsley on Wednesday over world number 16 McGill.
Ten-time ranking event winner White built a 4-1 lead with a top break of 67. McGill fought back to 4-3 before White sealed the match in a scrappy eighth frame. He now meets Yu Delu on Thursday evening with the winner to go through to the final stages in Berlin (January 31 to February 4).
Also enjoying a resurgence this season is Ken Doherty, and he scored a 5-3 win over Alexander Ursenbacher with top breaks of 54, 86 and 58.
Mark Allen showed his break-building class in a 5-3 win over Li Yuan, firing runs of 84, 120, 72, 113 and 130.
Shaun Murphy top scored with 96 in a 5-2 win over Paul Davison while Jack Lisowski saw off Kyren Wilson 5-1 with a top run of 70.
Alan McManus edged out Dominic Dale 5-4 while Barry Hawkins made a 113 in a 5-1 win over Jamie Curtis-Barrett.
