Williams And Doherty Among Shanghai Qualifiers

Former World Champions Mark Williams and Ken Doherty were among the 16 players to come through the final qualifying round of the Shanghai Masters on Friday.

Welshman Williams scored a top break of 90 in a 5-3 win over Thepchaiya Un-Nooh while Irishman Doherty whitewashed Mark King 5-0 with a top run of 74.

Michael Holt made an 82 in the deciding frame to beat Stuart Carrington 5-4 while Jimmy Robertson came from 3-2 down to beat Xiao Guodong 5-3, making breaks of 52, 62 and 69 in the last three frames.

Performance of the day came from Dominic Dale who trailed Michael Wasley 3-0 but made breaks of 123, 111 and 120 in getting back to 4-4 then took the decider 58-20.

Veteran Joe Swail booked his place in China with a 5-1 defeat of Peter Ebdon while Martin Gould won the last two frames to beat Mike Dunn 5-4.

China’s Liang Wenbo top scored with 77 in a 5-2 win over Alex Davies while Jack Lisowski beat Matthew Stevens 5-3 with a top break of 96.

There were also wins for Alan McManus, Michael White, Li Hang, Ryan Day, Matthew Selt, Andrew Higginson and Fergal O’Brien.
