Wilson was at the peak of his powers as he rattled in a series of big breaks to move within four frames of a 13th ranking event final. They resume at 7pm, first to ten going through to meet Shaun Murphy or Mark Selby in Sunday’s final. Kettering’s Wilson failed to win a match in his two previous appearances in this elite eight-man tournament, but by the end of tonight he could have eyes only for the £150,000 top prize.

Runs of 78, 130, 59 and 103 put him 4-0 ahead. Ding had failed to pot a ball at that stage as his opponent scored 403 unanswered points, within reach of Ronnie O’Sullivan’s record of 556. But Ding eventually got going with a run of 51 to take the fifth frame. Two more centuries from Wilson – 115 and 100 – sandwiched a break of 86 from Ding to leave the scoreline at 6-2.
