Captain Holds Off Maguire Fightback
Ali Carter withstood a Stephen Maguire comeback to emerge a 4-3 winner in their Romanian Snooker Masters quarter-final clash.
Both players are currently involved in a battle to clinch their spot at the Crucible for the World Championship. Carter sits 12th in the Race To the Crucible, with Maguire seeking to gain ground in 18th. However, that rankings tussle was put to one side in this afternoon’s invitational clash.
The Captain top scored with a run of 136 as he charged to a 3-1 advantage. However, Maguire hit back to take two frames on the bounce and set up a decider. It was Carter who came through with a run of 41 to progress.
His opponent in the last four will be Stuart Bingham, who brushed aside Liang Wenbo 4-1.
The 2015 World Champion looked to be in fine touch. He composed breaks of 83, 60 and 46 on his way to victory and remains in the hunt for the 50,000 top prize.
