Six time World Champion Steve Davis was at the Accrington Academy recently to launch the Little Nuggets Primary School Programme.
Part of the WPBSA’s Cue Zone into Schools Programme, it is aimed at primary schools wanting to offer an additional experience for children to learn English and Maths while ensuring they gain an introduction to snooker by taking part in a fun and stimulating activity.
A total of 38 primary school children from local feeder schools Hyndburn Park, St Mary’s Clayton-Le-Moors, St Mary’s Oswaldtwistle, Huncoat and St Mary Magdalene’s visited the Academy’s Functional Snooker Cue Zone. They were supported by the Accrington Academy’s Year 12 students who, as part of their BTEC Sport Qualification, are undertaking the WPBSA’s Level 1 Community and Schools Coaching Award.
Children took part in a Functional Snooker competition and the 60 second challenge, overseen by WPBSA coaches Andrew Highfield and John McGrainer, and then were entertained by the Nugget himself.
As part of the programme, each of the primary schools attending receive a six-foot snooker table for their school and one of the Academy’s Junior Coaches will visit to organise basic coaching and Functional Snooker school competitions, with all schools revisiting the Academy in the spring for an inter-school competition.
Functional Snooker has been developed to support the teaching and learning of Maths and English for children aged 7 and upwards.
At Key Stages 2 and 3 it is aimed at supporting the development of Maths and English skills, as well as helping older children.
Chris Lovell said: “It was a very special day to see so many young children coming together to gain an introduction to the game and have fun. Who knows, one day one of these Little Nuggets might just turn out just like the real one they met on the day.”
Trophies were on hand for the winners and everyone received a medal, t-shirt and framed certificate.
