Williams won the title on his debut in the event last year, but lost 2-1 to Anthony Hamilton in the first round this time at the Guild Hall. The opening frame went to Williams before Hamilton took a scrappy second then made an excellent 56 clearance in the decider to reach the quarter-finals.

Crowd favourite Jimmy White beat Gary Lees 2-0 with a top break of 58.

Nigel Bond, the 2012 champion, saw off Peter Ebdon 2-0 despite a top break of just 27, while 2011 winner Darren Morgan beat Joe Johnson 2-0.

Robert Milkins produced the best performance of the day, beating Tony Drago 2-0 in just 14 minutes with runs of 86 and 81.

Mark Davis beat Ken Doherty 2-1 in an exciting finish by potting the blue and pink in the decider, while Dominic Dale made a 104 in a 2-0 defeat of John Parrott. Rory McLeod edged out last year’s runner-up Fergal O’Brien 2-1.

Quarter-final draw:
Nigel Bond v Rory McLeod
